Year 4A · Grade 6: How It Is Done
Practice the adverbs from Year 3, and notice -e, -iter, and one special word.
What to notice
- -e
- -iter
- bene
Explanation
To make an adverb from a word like laetus, drop the -us, -a, or -um ending and add -e. Laetus becomes laete, happily. Miser becomes misere, miserably. A word like fortis or fidelis usually adds -iter: fortiter, bravely, and fideliter, faithfully. Brevis becomes breviter, briefly.
Bonus does not follow that shape. Its adverb is bene, well. Forte looks close to fortis, but forte means by chance, not bravely. In this lesson you choose the meaning. You do not fill a chart for every describing word.
Examples
- laete — happily Laetus drops -us and adds -e.
- fortiter — bravely Fortis takes -iter.
- bene — well The adverb of bonus.
