Year 3 · Grade 5: Stems and Emphasis
Use the genitive to find a noun stem and notice when Latin states a subject pronoun.
What to notice
- genitive singular
- noun stems
- pronoun emphasis
Examples
- rex, regis — king; stem reg-. The genitive regis reveals the stem reg-.
- nomen, nominis — name; stem nomin-. nominis minus -is gives nomin-.
- ego amo — I myself love / I do love. A stated subject pronoun often adds emphasis or contrast.
- tu amas — you yourself love / you do love. tu is often unnecessary unless the speaker wants contrast or emphasis.
- amat — he / she / it loves. The verb ending normally makes an unstressed subject pronoun unnecessary.
